What to Expect from Shoulder Replacement Surgical Procedures at Swift Surgeries!

Here is a brief highlight of how our specialized shoulder orthopedic surgeons perform total and shoulder oint replacement surgery:

Step 1

Initial Consultation

When we get the first call from our patients, we contact them for an initial consultation. At this step we discuss the importance of shoulder replacement surgery to relieve their consistent pain, the path to recovery and the expectations they should keep with the whole treatment plan. We also evaluate the mental, physical and emotional state of the patient during this stage to ensure each patient is optimized in every aspect.

Step 2

Pre-Operative Preparation

The pre-operative preparation for shoulder replacement at Swift Surgeries involves a detailed assessment of the patient’s medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests (such as X-rays or MRI). Patients receive counselling on anaesthesia options, potential risks, and the rehabilitation process to set expectations for recovery.

Step 3

Surgery

After the pre-operative phase is completed, we move towards the surgery.. The procedure involves removing the damaged parts of the shoulder joint and replacing them with a prosthetic implant. Surgeons carefully align the prosthesis to restore joint function, reduce pain, and improve mobility. The surgery is typically done under general anaesthesia and involves minimally invasive techniques for quicker recovery.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

The final step of our shoulder replacement procedure at Swift Surgeries involves navigating the post-surgical life including all the lifestyle changes and modifications. Our team of post-op care guides the patient in-depth about the changes to adapt and the precautions to take until the full recovery. Much of the recovery and rehabilitation phase is discussed, prepared and reviewed with the patient and the wellness team before the surgery takes place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to your most pressing questions about our orthopedic services and procedures.
Are there any risks involved with shoulder replacement surgery?

As with any elective or orthopedic surgery, there are risks involved. At Swift Surgeries, our extensive research, preparation and education done in advance allows us to proceed with surgeries with minimal to no risks to the patient. Common risk factors for a shoulder replacement surgery include nerve damage, shoulder dislocation, limited mobility or blood clots. But with proper pre- and post-operative care and advanced surgical solutions, the method is as risk-free as possible. It is important for patients to present accurate and factual information during pre-operative screenings and appointments to ensure our wellness team is up to date with the patient’s status allowing for an accurate optimization process to take place, which ultimately, lowers concern for risks.

Shoulder replacement surgery involves removing a damaged or arthritic shoulder joint and replacing it with a prosthetic implant. It is typically recommended for patients with severe shoulder pain, limited mobility, or joint degeneration.

A person suffering from persistent shoulder pain and lack of mobility due to a traumatic shoulder joint injury, osteoarthritis or dislocated shoulder joint, should opt for shoulder replacement surgery as these conditions might not go away with regular medications and physical therapy.

Recovery times vary, but most patients can expect to return to light activities within 6-8 weeks. Full recovery, including strength-building and range of motion, typically takes 4-6 months. Our rehabilitation program plays a key role in enhancing recovery. It is important to follow the physician’s orders during post operative recovery to avoid overuse and potential damage to the surgery site during recovery.

In total shoulder replacement, the ball (humeral head) and socket (glenoid) of the shoulder joint are replaced with a prosthesis. In reverse shoulder replacement, the ball and socket are switched (the ball is attached to the scapula, and the socket is attached to the upper arm), typically used for patients with rotator cuff damage. At Swift Surgeries, we follow minimally invasive methods for all our orthopedic surgeries and for that, total shoulder replacement surgery is the best choice.
Shoulder replacement surgery is typically performed under general anaesthesia, meaning you will be asleep throughout the procedure. In some cases, regional anaesthesia (nerve blocks) may also be used to numb the area.

In most cases, an advanced shoulder replacement surgical method only requires a few days of majority bed rest before you are mobile to some extent. You will however need to wear a shoulder support a few weeks after surgery with light exercises a few weeks later.
