Pre-Operative Care

Expert Orthopedic Care, Delivering Faster Solutions for a Pain-Free Future, Near you!

Our patients are provided many resources before, during and after surgery. These include but aren’t limited to, educational seminars, videos, FAQ’s, direct access to their physician, 24/7 emergency hotline, and detailed exams. One critical step in our process, is pre-operative care.

Prior to being scheduled for surgery, every single patient is seen by our nurse practitioner within our Wellness Institute. Our NP does a thorough health and wellness exam touching on mental, physical and emotional health. Patients are assessed for their overall wellness to ensure they are completely healthy for surgery.

Each patient fills out the Molli Pre-Arthroplasty Score Form (MPAS) prior to their office visit. This helps our nurse practitioner to be prepared for the appointment before meeting the patient. Once the patient is in the office, the NP works with them on any areas of concern and explains any potential risk factors that may be present with their current health status.

The key to having our NP on board and this entire process is 100% for the patient and their recovery. This process helps us to lessen any risks to the patient during and after surgery. The NP is able to thoroughly examine areas such as tobacco use, diabetes, obesity, mental health, anemia and malnutrition.

The most effective part of this step in our process is the change implementation. If our NP has any concerns about a patients readiness for surgery, it doesn’t end with a negative conversation and a “see ya in a few months”. Our NP works directly with each patient on a custom plan to help get them optimized for surgery.

Our NP creates, reviews and implements changes to the patients current life that will help them best prepare for surgery. Things like diet changes, lifestyle adjustments, or seeking professional guidance are all ways our NP can help patients.

While this step in the process may seem to prolong the patient receiving their surgery, it’s incredibly important to note how impactful it can be for post operative recovery when we prevent risks rather than have to intervene after the fact.

In our opinion, and based on the feedback from our patients, it’s well worth a slight delay in surgery if it means a smoother, faster, and more efficient recovery period post surgery.

Pre-operative care refers to the preparation and attention given to patients before they undergo a hip, knee or shoulder surgery. This includes conducting pre-operative assessments, providing information about the surgery and what to expect, ensuring the patient is in optimal health for the procedure, and addressing any concerns or questions they may have. Through this step, we aim to ensure the safety and readiness of each patient prior to their upcoming surgery, as well as to help them feel informed and supported throughout the process.

Many times, we find that patients aren’t aware of the potential risk factors prior to surgery so recently, we’ve added some steps in our process to help educate, inform, and start the conversation. By adding visual diagrams with descriptive details outlining the most common risk factors (diabetes, tobacco use, anemia, obesity, malnutrition, and mental health) to each patient exam room, patients and their guests are now able to read about some of these factors while in the exam room.

Additionally, we provide patients with a risk factor factsheet in their packets they take home after their appointment. This then provides them with the information once they get home, should they have any follow up questions or concerns.

We’ve noticed a great deal of positive feedback since implementing our Wellness Institute to the process at Whole Health Orthopedic Institute . Patients continue to extend their appreciation to our Wellness Team for their dedication to individualized care.

As we continue to grow as a team and practice, we’ll continue to implement and make adjustments to our process as needed, always keeping our patient-first & patient-focused mindset at the forefront.
